We hear the term “social distancing” and imagine ourselves locked up at home with no connection to the outside world. However, as Jeff Shore put it, “social distancing” is actually just “physical distancing”. While we may not be able to physically be with our friends, family, or coworkers, we can still connect with them and socialize. Here are some ways you can stay social while social distancing.
Missing game nights, happy hour, or just general face-to-face connection? There are a plentitude of video call options that can help with that! Have a virtual cheers, play a game that doesn’t require a board (Charades, Scattergories, 20 Questions, etc.), or just chat your hearts out!
Missing movie marathons or gaming with friends? No need to cancel your plans with your friends or family! Instead, just make those plans virtual. There are a couple options for syncing up your activities...
Watch2gether allows you to shop, listen to music, and watch online videos at the same time as your friends and family. It works by setting up a private virtual chat room that automatically syncs up your activities so you can do some online shopping, watch Youtube videos, or just listen to your favorite podcast at the same time.
The second sync option is a Google Chrome extension called Netflix Party. Netflix party works similarly to Watch2gether, in which it will set you up with a private virtual chat room and simultaneously stream anything on Netflix to you and anyone you invite. However, Netflix party only works if you and your family or friends also have a Netflix login.
Discord is an all-inclusive phone and desktop app that allows you to share a chat room, group voice channel, and stream your activities to your friends. Unlike watch2gether or Netflix party, Discord is not limited to certain websites or apps. With Discord, you’ll have the ability to stream anything you want to your group and simultaneously watch Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and so on.
Social media apps and websites allow you to chat with friends, post updates, make entertaining videos, video call, and even live stream (Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter all offer a live stream option). Staying connected while physically distancing yourself has never been more streamlined.
Keep in mind, social media can also be a source of media panic and anxiety for some. When using social media to stay in touch, make sure you are staying in control of your inputs.
Socialize on, friends! (At a safe distance) ;)
