Ladies – let’s start with the basics to building a professional wardrobe for work. Your buyers want to feel that you are a successful, professional agent - dress for success! Appearance makes a huge difference so take the time and make the investment that it takes to have a polished, professional look.

Wardrobe Basics: If you plan smart purchases, a polished professional wardrobe is possible on any budget:

• Start with investing in a dark neutral colored suit – black, grey, or navy.  2 piece suits are good, but go with 3 pieces if you can, pants, skirt, and blazer. This will give you a lot more versatility.
• Choose quality fabrics with a classic style that will last for years.  Plan to add 1 new quality piece a year, i.e. a white jacket, a dress.  Never buy anything that will not go with 2 items you own.
• Once you have these staple items, you can explore bargain racks and discount stores for some designer brands, adding in colorful blouses, sweaters, and accessories to change things up.

A Word about Fit:

• Do not squeeze into your clothes to look like a stuffed sausage.  Professional fit is a relaxed fit.  Forget about size numbers – buy what fits. The numbers are very inconsistent.
• Finding the right fit often means buying something that is a little larger in some areas and having it tailored, rather than buying something that is a too small.
• Utilize the sales people, the Fashion Director, or personal shopper in department stores if you need help with style or sizing. They are experts and are always willing to help you coordinate what suits you best.

Cosmetics:

• The professionals at department store cosmetic counters are a great resource for those who need a little more help with makeup – they have tons of great tips and tricks.
• All the manufacturers’ counters offer “make-overs” in the hope you will buy a few products. These are 100% worth it because you will get matched with colors that complement your skin tone, learn new methods of application, and get good skin care instruction.
• If you are on a tighter budget, you can supplement with similar products from your local drugstore. Just do your research and make sure you are getting quality products.

First impressions are created mostly based on appearance. Don’t short-change yourself by neglecting your professional wardrobe. You never have a second chance to make a first impression – the time is now!
